New Standards on Test Methods for Car Tires GB/T 4502 and GB/T 521

July 2023The Chinese National Tire Rim Standardization Technical Committee (TC19 for short) and the National Tire Rim Standardization Technical Committee Auto Industry and Agricultural Machinery Tire Rim Branch (TC19SC1 for short) have announced two new GB standards concerning test methods for car tires, both of which are to be implemented this year. Specifically, they are GB/T 4502-2023 Laboratory test methods for passenger car tire capabilities (this supersedes the previous version GB/T 4502-2016) and GB/T 521-2023 Test Method of Measuring Peripheral Dimensions for Tires (which supersedes GB/T 521-2012). Car tires require CCC certification to be approved for import and sale in China.
GB/T 4502-2023 was published on May 23, 2023, and is scheduled to take effect on December 1, 2023.
GB/T 521-2023 was announced on March 17, 2023, and is scheduled to be implemented on October 1, 2023.

For GB/T 521-2023, in addition to the structural adjustments and editorial changes, the following changes from the previous version, among others, are included:
- Add “Electric bicyclc tire.s and rickshaw tires” in the scope of application
- Change the accuracy requirements for the tire Pressure gauge
- Add “non-contact measuring instruments” and related requirements
- Add specific provisions on measuring inflation pressure
- Add measurement method for “overall tire width”
- Change the provisions on the number of measurement Points for “section Width, groove depth, tread wear mark height”
- Change the Value of “n” from “3.14” to “3.1416”
