Lectra emphasizes dynamics of China’s automotive market

November 2018Lectra is a leading, multinational manufacturing company based in Paris specialized in the development of cutting machines for leather and textiles used in the furniture, fashion and automotive industries. In recent years they have been producing digital cutting machines which accounted for 40% of the companies € 277 million in sales for 2017.
China plays a significant role for Lectra in several respects: globally, they are now the largest automotive market and therefore both an important production site as well as market for seat covers, vehicle interiors and airbags. China has shown more of a willingness to embrace Lectra’s newer technologies including digital cutting machines compared to the West. Holger Max-Lang, Managing Director of Lectra Germany, points out that on average Chinese customers place significantly higher demands on the company. Although the company’s roadmap already includes these “special requests”, they usually come as a surprise as there do not seem to be similar demands in Europe, yet. At the same time, Chinese companies are profiting from their drive for digitization. While many European companies seem to have a more conservative stance, e.g. by investing in well-established but almost outdated technologies and machines, Chinese firms are eager to implement innovative equipment and ideas such as Industry 4.0.
