BorgWarner builds new plant in Wuhan, China
1. November 2018The new plant in Wuhan, which was created in the Caidian Economic Development Zone, includes not only the actual production, but also other business areas such as quality assurance, sales, logistics and finance. The new plant has a total floor space of 26,000 square meters and provides work for just over 300 new employees. At full capacity and after a test phase of operation, the number of workers is to be doubled over the next five years to 600 employees.
Construction began in 2016, one year after the acquisition of Remy International Inc, a leading manufacturer of rotating electrical vehicle components. The new building was based on an existing Remy plant whose production facilities were integrated and expanded into the new BorgWarner plant. For the first time, new drive technologies for hybrid and electric vehicles such as the P2 module are manufactured in China. In September 2018, BorgWarner signed a high volume contract for delivery to two major Chinese OEMs. In addition to the hybrid modules, the plant produces drive motors, starter generators and starters as well as alternators and other associated components.
According to Dr. Stefan Demmerle, President and General Manager of BorgWarner PowerDrive Systems, sees the opening of the new plant as a milestone for BorgWarner in China. This will significantly expand the production capacities of the various drive systems and ensure sustained growth in China. Through close cooperation with local partners as well as increasing demand for electric and hybrid vehicles in China, the new production site will be able to meet the requirements for the coming years. Many components of electric and hybrid vehicles need a China CCC (China Compulsory Certificate).
