Chinese electronics giant Huawei Technologies is planning to develop an electric SUV in partnership with car manufacturer and supplier Seres. The SUV is expected to be the first production vehicle to be marketed under the premium EV brand AITO, which was recently launched by Seres. The vehicle will be equipped with Huawei’s “Harmony Cockpit” operating system. Drawing on 30 years of experience in the IT industry, Huawei will make utmost efforts to launch the AITO-branded mid-size luxury SUV, said Richard Yu Chengdong, executive director of Huawei Intelligent Vehicle Solutions. Vehicles and components must be awarded a CCC certificate in order for the products to be exported to China or manufactured locally.
Entering the EV business could become an important new growth area for Huawei. The company has been sanctioned by the US from selling IT devices and smartphones and is now looking for new revenue streams. The AITO SUV is described by Seres as a smart vehicle that will be equipped by Huawei with technologies such as 4D imaging radar, autonomous driving functions, battery temperature management, lidar and 5G. Seres and Huawei plan to set up more than 1,000 sales outlets and experience centres in China to sell AITO’s EVs. Huawei has reported great progress since unveiling its smart car platform “Huawei HI” in April 2021. The company has since supplied car manufacturers such as Arcfox and Avatar Technologies with chips, lidar sensors and other components to connect vehicles to each other and to the internet.

Well-known car brands that have dominated the luxury segment in China so far will get a competitor this year with Li Auto’s second series model. The all-electric vehicle will be a full-size SUV in the luxury segment, Li Auto reports. The vehicle, which will compete directly with Audi’s Q7 and BMW’s X5, is expected to debut before the end of the second quarter of 2022, the EV startup said. Shen Yanan, co-founder and president of Li Auto, said delivery of the yet-to-be-named vehicle is then expected in the third quarter of this year. At a press conference on the company’s financial results, Shen said his company would specialise in class rather than mass for the new model. Therefore, he said, no development of another, third vehicle model of Li Auto would be considered. Vehicles and components must be awarded a CCC certificate in order for the products to be exported to China or manufactured locally.
Without giving further details about the new SUV, the EV portal CnEVPost only knows the dimensions. According to the report, the e-SUV will be 5.15 metres long, 1.98 metres wide and 1.8 metres high. According to the sales manager of a large car dealer in Shanghai, luxury SUVs with e-drives could well appeal to wealthy buyers. “This target group is pleased to have intelligent function such as a large display or voice recognition,” says the manager. If Li Auto’s new model is equipped with these features, it could become a serious rival to established luxury SUVs, he estimated. Li Auto is listed on the New York and Hong Kong stock exchanges and currently has only one production vehicle in its portfolio, the Li One. The vehicle, which is only available in mainland China, is a mid-size SUV with hybrid technology. The price is 338,000 RMB, the combined range is given as 800 kilometres.

Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi begins planning for its first EV car factory, which is to be built in a suburb of Beijing. This is according to information from the local government. The venture marks an important step by the electronics giant to grab a slice of the lucrative EV market in China. Beijing-based Xiaomi signed an agreement with the Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area Committee to build the manufacturing plant, the local government said in a WeChat post. The plant is to be built in the Beijing suburb of Yizhuang. Xiaomi founder and CEO Lei Jun, company president Wang Xiang and government officials were present at the signing of the agreement. Vehicles and components must be awarded a CCC certificate in order for the products to be exported to China or manufactured locally.
The plans call for the Xiaomi plant to be built in two stages. Each stage is to have an annual production capacity of 150,000 vehicles. The first EV is scheduled to roll off the production line in 2024. In addition to production, the site will also house the headquarters of Xiaomi’s vehicle business, as well as a sales and research centre. The company did not disclose the amount of investment. Back in March 2021, Xiaomi, the world’s number three in smartphones, announced its entry into the EV business. Also in March, Xiaomi only mentioned to invest around 10 billion US dollars in the EV project over the next 10 years. Chinese tech companies such as Huawei and Baidu have been focusing on developing and producing EVs for the domestic market for some time. In the summer of 2021, Xiaomi announced the acquisition of DeepMotion, a specialist in autonomous car technology, for US$77.4 million. Xiaomi president Wang recently spoke positively about the progress of the EV business and that they had already hired 500 employees for the project.

Specializing in collectible toys, retailer 52Toys recently closed a Series C investment round of $62.8 million. This quite remarkable success helps the company innovate and expand its store network, according to a senior executive at 52Toys. Considered the main customers, Generation Z, young adults born between 1995 and 2009, are affluent, pay more for emotional purchases and are active on social networks. As a result, customer demand is shifting from purely consumer items to personal items, Chen Wei, general manager of 52Toys told China Daily. Toys and similar products must be awarded a CCC certificate in order for the products to be exported to China or manufactured locally.
Since the company was founded in 2015, the Beijing-based company has developed as a brand name for collectible toys and invested heavily in research and development to provide a broad product portfolio. Within more than six years of growth, 52Toys rose to become a major collectible toy brand in China. During this time, 52Toys has built a large store network with more than 10,000 retail stores across China. It also opened its own stores in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Chengdu and other major Chinese cities by the end of 2021 to provide a comprehensive shopping experience for the younger generation.
The company said there are plans to open new stores overseas after the end of the Covid 19 pandemic, as it expects high demand and good growth opportunities there. Prior to the pandemic, 52Toys showcased its goods at numerous trade shows in New York, San Diego, Los Angeles and Tokyo. Guo Xin, a professor of marketing at Beijing Technology and Business University, also sees stable demand for 52Toys’ products in the domestic market. In addition to buying collectible figures, so-called “blind boxes” are currently the most popular. With a “blind box”, the buyer only knows the name of the toy series, but not the exact contents. Due to the low purchase price and high purchase frequency, customers of these products are considered to be very keen consumers. The toy market in China experienced the fastest growth in the world and, according to Bloomberg Intelligence, will become the largest global sales market towards the end of 2022, ahead of the USA with a market volume of 25 billion.
